Norwegian Flight Delay Compensation

Norwegian flight delay compensation.

How to claim for delayed flight? And how much can you get?

In Europe, you are protected against flight delays. In the event of flight delay, you have a right to care, and, in some situations, to flight delay compensation. It doesn’t matter how much did your ticket cost and whether or you have travel insurance. Your nationality and age don’t matter either. All travelers in the EU are protected under the law. The airlines, including Norwegian, have to follow these laws. How to claim compensation for a delayed flight?

One of the options is to let professionals deal with this.

Or, you can pursue flight delay compensation on your own.

1. Norwegian Flight Delay Compensation: EU Regulations

Overall, the EU flight delay compensation rules are simple.

The regulations in the EU state that if you reach your destination 3 or more hours later than scheduled, and the delay is due to the fault of the airline, you can get compensation from the airline you were flying with. There’s almost the same regulation in the UK, too.

If you’re flying to or from Europe, your flight is delayed for 3 or more hours, and the delay is due to the fault of Norwegian, you are eligible to compensation of up to €600.

Could you be entitled to Norwegian flight delay compensation?

Yes, if your flight meets these requirements:

  • It’s a 3+ hour delay;
  • It’s due to the fault of Norwegian;
  • Flight is to/from Europe.

So, all the above mentioned rules apply to all Norwegian delays and cancellations.

What if you are traveling with a non-European airline such as Qatar Airways, Etihad, Turkish Airlines, etc.? Then the European regulations only cover flights departing from the EU.

By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

1.1 Extraordinary Circumstances

There are situations when you aren’t eligible for compensation.

Flights delayed due to “extraordinary circumstances” are not eligible to compensation.

What are “extraordinary circumstances”? These are events that are out of the airline’s control. Bad weather, natural disaster, nationwide strike, terrorism threat, civil unrest, security issues at the airport, just to name a few. If your Norwegian flight is delayed or cancelled due to such situations, you can’t get compensation from Norwegian.

What if your flight is delayed because of a strike? If it’s a strike of Norwegian employees, you might be entitled to compensation. Norwegian has control over their employees. It’s not something unavoidable.

Keep in mind that you always should double check what you’re told.

Because airlines often don’t tell the right reasons for flight delays and cancellations, as well as wrongly refuse compensation claims. All of it is done to avoid paying compensation. You see, airlines lose a lot of money when they pay compensations to affected passengers. If you are claiming compensation yourself, keep in mind that you will need to take additional steps to get compensation the airline owes you. Or, work with a flight compensation company. They can check your flight and claim compensation on your behalf.

Just fill in our claim form, and experts will do that for you.

1.2 How to Calculate the Delay Time?

What really matters is the time of arrival to your destination.

The time of arrival, not time of departure. Calculate the delay time when you arrive at your final destination. If you have a connecting flight, the final destination is your last stop.

Flight delay time is calculated based on the actual time of arrival to your destination, specifically, when the doors of the airplane are opened. If the doors are opened 3 or more hours after the original arrival time, you can get compensation. Keep in mind that you can’t calculate the delay time based on the time of departure.

1.3 Right to Care

In Europe you also have a right to care.

When you flight is delayed for 3+ hours, you can receive certain services from Norwegian. These are the laws in the EU. You are entitled to receive care from the airline when you face delay.

Norwegian must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If the flight is delayed overnight, you should be offered accommodation and transportation from and to the airport as well. In Europe all passengers are eligible for this type of care from the airline.

2.1 How Long Does It Take?

No matter how you proceed, it isn’t a short process.

It depends on how communicative the airline is. If the airline is not responding or is denying your compensation claim, it might take months until you get the money. In situations like these, it’s necessary to take the case to a national enforcement body or court. All of it takes time.

If everything goes smoothly, you can get Norwegian flight delay compensation in 2-3 months. Still, it’s not a short process.

3.1 Norwegian Voucher Refund or Cash?

You might be offered a voucher or coupon instead of compensation.

Majority of airlines were offering coupons during the COVID crisis.

However, if a compensation or refund is due, you don’t have to accept any vouchers or coupons from Norwegian. Normally, in the EU, and also the UK, airline compensations and refunds are paid in cash or by bank transfer.
